Here's one of my fun memories:
I was barely three years old and my immediate younger sister was almost one year old. Her birthday was a few days away—Christmas day. Mother's birthday comes immediately after hers, the next day which is boxing day.
PS: I have this memory etched in my brain but I do not know how. I remember every detail. Maybe it's because it's funny.
Days to mom's birthday, she got a beautiful birthday cake. This cake was well decorated and looked appealing to us kids. It was a white cake with a red ribbon around it. It had small sugary details (crunchy drops of yellow icing round it) that one could pick off and lick— which child doesn't like sugar?
At the time, I just couldn't imagine why mum didn't want to cut it immediately. Everytime I saw that cake, I melted inside, wondering how it would taste in my mouth.
Sensing something (children and sugar!), Mum placed the cake on the refrigerator. She put it there because that was somewhere beyond our reach.
Staring at the cake each time I went into the kitchen, I'd think of ways to reach this cake. One day, an idea dropped in my mind. The cake was high up and I was too small. If I was going to get to the cake, I had to use a platform. I tried the kitchen stool but only got me a few inches higher. My next option was to try the dining chair.
While mom was out that day and our nanny was busy, I dragged the dining chair into the kitchen. I was the tallest of the two of us so I climbed up the dining chair. Standing on the dining chair, I could stretch and reach the cake on the refrigerator.
Each time nanny wasn't looking, I'd drag the chair and pick off some treats for my younger sister and I. Mum didn't notice because her heart was at rest. She thought she had placed her beautiful cake out of our reach.
We picked and licked till Christmas morning. Mum brought down her cake to have a last glance before her birthday. I still remember the shock on mum's face when she saw her lovely cake. It's something that is etched deep. I felt sorry that her beautiful cake had some gaps on the icing (points within our reach, where the small details were removed from).
Though I felt sorry, my remorse was short-lived. I still wanted to eat the cake. Mum saw no use keeping the cake any longer so she cut the cake that day and I ate— legally this time though (LOL!).
The picture is below. I think my memory paints it more beautifully though.
That's my immediate younger sister on her first birthday. Spot the cake
